Wheee! Ree!

Posted by Aarti on September 6th, 2010 . Filed under: Uncategorized .

I worked yesterday.

And I love the new definition of “work” for me.

I “worked” at the Los Angeles Times’ first ever Food and Wine celebration.

I got to sample food from some of LA’s best restaurants, wineries and food trucks… for free.

I got to sign recipe cards with my photo on ‘em, and meet hundreds of you guys who made me feel so loved and appreciated.

And… AND… I got to sit next to REE!!!!!

AHAHAHHAHHHHHHH! REE! The woman behind one of the best blogs on the net, The Pioneer Woman. I literally blog the way I blog because of Ree. This woman’s sense of humour, gorgeous photography and dedication to blogging whilst homeschooling her 4 kids, tending to a working cattle ranch, doing all their laundry and generally being Supermum is nothing short of astounding. Especially when her outfits, manicure and makeup are impeccable.

Yup, I’m just that superficial. I was checking out her manicure. Ha! My nails are SUCH a mess. In fact, I think it’s time for a home pedicure. Yup. Maybe a cup of rooibos chai too. And heck, while I’m at it, an episode of my new favourite show, Rescue Me, wouldn’t go amiss. (I know, I know… it’s an old show. But we’ve been catching up through Netflix.)

What are you doing today?

aarti

p.s. thank you to the incredibly sweet and generous Rene Lynch from the LA Times; I used to run to the driveway to read what she wrote every Wednesday in the Times’ Food section. Really. What a weird life where now I get to talk to her face to face… about ME!

That’s so great! I wish I could have a job like that… instead, I’m doing a boring MBA and I’m 23 and so over school!

I think I need to take an improv class

P.S. Love your personality and sense of humor, please don’t ever change!

  2. Christie {Honoring Health}

I think I would pee my pants if I saw both of you in one place!

  3. Susie's Homemade

    What an awesome experience!!

  4. Teri

What am I doing today? Nothing as interesting as you! I am organizing my hobby room after dropping hubby at the airport so he can head back to Dutch Harbor, AK for pollock fishing. Everyone is having more fun than me! LOL

  5. Mrs. A

I have been watching your show, and I think it’s AMAZING!! I have some of your recipes on deck to try, and I’m so excited :) You are an awesome addition to food network’s lineup- truly a star :)

  6. Sara

How exciting! I love Pioneer Woman too! I’ve been reading her blog for a few years now, and I so much enjoy the way she blogs (and her pictures make me want to be right there!).

My husband and I watched Food Network Star from the very beginning, and I have to say, you are the only one I liked consistently. I was so excited you won and I watch your show every week! I love to cook, especially foods from around the world, but I’ve never had the courage to try Indian. Now I have you to show me how! All the recipes I’ve tried have been amazing, but I’m a sucker for chocolate, so the chocolate and ginger pie is the one I can’t stop eating.

Thank you for being your joyful and warm spirited self!

  7. Jeanne

Love your new show Aarti and I’m so excited to learn Indian cooking. Congratulations on winning. We watched it from the beginning and knew you would win it!

  8. Sara

It was fantastic to see you yesterday at the festival! You are so inspirational to a start-up blogger and I just loved watching you on the Next Food Network Star. Your warmth and enthusiasm came through as much in person as it did on the show and it’s great to see someone as real as you “make it.”
    All the best,
    Sara

  9. Daisy

Love your show Aarti! My 11-yr-old daughter loves the cultural tidbits you mention, makes geography easier for her when she can hear about how people live and what they eat!

I love PW also, she’s a great cook as well. Wish I could’ve seen the two of you together!

I’ve been catching up on old shows thru Netflix as well – my old favorite show “ER”. Been a long time since I’ve seen it!

Thanks for making Indian cooking seem not as difficult as I had thought!

  10. Ree

Aarti, you beat me to it! I wanted to gush about you, but I had to fly home to Oklahoma first. You’re beautiful inside and out, and beyond talented. And you saw me on the one day a year that my nails didn’t look disgusting. I got a manicure the night before because I had mud (chocolate? yes, I’ll go with chocolate) under my nails!

You’re an asset to the internet, television, and the world. Love to you, sweetie.

  11. Heather Young

Aarti, you are just the cutest, sweetest, awesome-est (yes, awesome-EST) person I’ve stumbled upon in the TV world! I cheered for you the whole way through NFNS and was ecstatic when you won! You TOTALLY deserved it, by the way!

On a side note, I spent yesterday watching the original Aarti Paarti shows and you are, single-handedly, responsible for making me want to move to California!

  12. Bronwyn

Aarti, love the show! I’ve made several of your recipes and am looking forward to trying them ALL. Now, when are you publishing a cookbook? Seriously, every one of your recipes has been a hit in my house, with my husband, and two tween daughters. Thank you so much!

  13. Kelley

I would have loved to seen both of you in the same place! When’s the Food Network going to a Challenge show with food bloggers? That would be so fun!

  14. Carissa Hanagriff

Aarti, I was going to say “News flash: I toggle between your blog and P-Dub all the time. ALL the time. Literally every day, I check one of you, then the other.” But then, it seems, that P-DUB HERSELF already told you how fabulous you are! As a new food blogger, I follow both of you and find you both fabulous.

PS- Does it make me cool that I read the same blog as P-dub (ie: yours?) or that I read the same blog as Aarti (ie: hers?)

  15. Dianne

I hope you never lose your enthusiasm for the simplest things! It is what makes you such a breath of fresh air. Yes, go get yourself a manicure and whatever else it is you need to recharge!

  16. Brooke

AHHH! is right! I wish I lived in L.A. and could have seen you both. My husband laughs at me because I refer to you both by your first names like we are old friends (in my mind we are, because I have been following both of your blogs for a good long time now). I was so excited when you got your show. The world needs to know how to use Indian spices! We LOVE us some Indian food!! Definitely our favorite! Ree should host one of her weekend getaways at The Lodge featuring you and your Indian cooking! :)

  17. Gregory Huff

Hi Aarti! I have to say, I was so glad you won! I was looking forward to making your cuisine, and I made my first recipe from your show: Bombay Sloppy Joes. They were even better than I thought they would be! If you wouldn’t mind reading my little blub praising them at http://artmangreg.blogspot.com/2010/09/aarti-party-dinner.html . Congrats again!!! I look forward to making more of your recipes!

  18. Cou

If only I could have been there. You and PW together would be an awesome day! I’m so happy for your success!!

  19. Heidi's Recipes

I married my high school sweetheart and can’t wait to make him some “Summer Lovin’”, especially that pie!

I forget that the entire world isn’t awe struck by Ree, but to me she is as Rock Star as they get. Way to go! BTW, I was checking our your nails during your show (yes, I’m like that too) and was thinking I should get me a natural manicure just like you:)

  20. Kahri

I love Ree too!! Sitting with both of you would be awesome! :-)

  21. Jen E @ mommablogsalot

How cool that you got to sit next to Ree! I would be ecstatic to say the least, as I am a huge fan of hers as well!

I spent the day at the mall with my husband and kids – and just had Starbuck’s salted caramel hot chocolate – yum! But nothing compared to your day!

  22. Natalie

Just wanted to say hello and let you know that I adore you and adore your new show. I’m proud to be an Aarti Party fangirl. Thanks for being so darn swanky! (And with you and Ree Drummond in the same venue … I am surprised the whole shabang didn’t implode with awesomeness.)

  23. Jennie

    Hey Aarti,
That sounds like an amazing time!! So jealous:)
Well, I just finished marinating some chicken in yogurt and spices for chicken tikka masala(from scratch!!) Can’t wait to try the finished product. Also made a butternut squash risotto tonight, I’m tired! Loved your show on Sunday and really want to make the mango bbq sauce, although I really don’t like fennel… oh well, guess I’ll just leave it out:)
Take care, have a good week!

    -Jennie

  24. YvonneinLA

I thought your panel with Ree was so inspiring with tons of useful information. You guys should go on the road together.
Thanks for video advice. I’ll definitely work on it.

  25. The Enchanted Cook

What a blessing it was to get to see and hear you both speak at the event. Wow! You two were funny, informative, inspiring and warm. Thank you for generously sharing!!

  26. Lira

I’m so loving your journey. I’m living vicariously through you. :) And “Rescue Me” ROCKS!!

  27. Deloris

How great for you Aarti! Congratulations on becoming the Next Food Network Star! I love watching your show because it is different. I wish you the best! :)

  28. PJ

Your joy is so infectious, I love it. What am I doing today? Making chicken soup and apple cake and tonight for dinner I’m making your naan pizza recipe. I even found mango chutney in my local supermarket, I can’t wait to try the pizza! I bought cumin too, so I’m stocking up on Indian spices to make even more of your recipes.

  29. Sandy B

I LOVE Ree too! Her cookbook is wonderful and I have to go to her blog multiple times a day!
Aarti, you are so great! I love this blog and love watching you on the Food Network and trying your recipes. I hope you come out with a cookbook soon. Best of luck in the future!

  30. Jam

Aarti I finally got to watch your show, On Demand! Love your show, and your recipes.

I have no clue who Ree is…sorry.

  31. Adelina

I wish I could have sat in more for the panel Aarti! I brought my kids along and they were hungry during the panel discussion…It was probably not the best idea but they were happy to see you. I got hear some of the discussion, but not all. I wish there is some recording I can play back. I enjoyed listening to both of you. I was impressed by Ree as well since it was my first time learning about her. I did go home later and looked up her blog as well and will be following her as well.

I was going to be sooo disappointed if I did not get a chance to say hi to you that day, since my main purpose to coming to the event was you.

THANK YOU sooooo much for coming and saying hi to my girls and family later. You made our day! I would be posting my pic with you on my blog hopefully soon. I have been sharing my excitement with everyone at work, friends, family and twitter. I have to say everybody I speak with LLLLLLLOVES you!!!!

  32. Debbie

Yeah! I loved watching you on Next Food Network Star, I didn’t even realize you were a food blogger! I was getting my Pioneer Woman fix for the day and saw your name, I am so excited find your site now! Looking forward to hearing about all your upcoming adventures in cooking!

  33. Emily

Hi Aarti! I loved watching you on TNFNS and was thrilled when you won! When I was reading your Food Network bio and saw that you were a food blogger, I literally had the thought “I wonder if she knows Pioneer Woman?” because I LOVE her, and I thought you two ladies would really get along well…and voila! What do you know…this post ends up here and PW posts about you, too! My hunch was correct. :-) Congrats on your success and God bless!

  34. Kristen

    Love Rescue Me!!!

  35. Marissa

I’ve been following your blog since I found out you had one while you were on NFNS. I was reading all of your previous posts, and stumbled on the one where you mentioned Ree’s blog (which I’ve been following for a few years), while I was eating her most recently posted recipe, Curried Chicken Salad. What a coincidence! I own her cookbook, and I’m hoping you put one out soon so I can add it to my collection! P.S. My 4-year-old daughter loves your FN show, as well as your YouTube videos, especially the talking sweet potatoes! She asks me every day if we can watch it again.

  36. Anna-Elizabeth

Oh dear me! You have a blog! (Although, that’s kind of a duh because you are described as a food blogger… it’s been a long Summer cut me some slack.) And the first post I read is where you met my other favorite blogger, Ree! My whole world is complete. I will spend the rest of my day reading your backlogs.

I can’t wait to watch your career on Food Network! I saw you in a promo for The Next Food Network Star and actually started watching the show because you were just so intriguing! Hooray!

  37. Meredith

Sounds like a hard day of work. ;)

What am I doing today? Well, I believe in a bit I’ll be enjoying a scoop of that kulfi you inspired me to make. I kind of wish I motivating myself to buy, shell, and chop the pistachios because I think they would’ve been worth it, but I felt a little lazy about it — especially since Brian doesn’t like pistachios. Next time… Oh, but what a wonderfully rich and delicious treat it is! And the scent and flavor, for whatever reason, is reminiscent of pumpkin pie. Good thing it’s just about that time of year, right?

  38. Rani

Yes, PDub has quite the following and you will too! You look so happy in the pix! Go girl!

  39. Jessica

Aarti! I checked your about me and could not find an email…so I figured the best way to contact you would be your comments. I recently made your Green Chicken Curry (and blogged about it!) and it was heaven! I would love to do a fun little interview with you on my blog if you are up for it!

I am so glad you won NFNS! And I am loving your new show!

Hope to hear from you soon!
    Jessica

  40. Melinda

Aarti – I love your new show and am so happy that Food Network made the right decision to make you the Next Food Network Star – and you will be just that – a star! I haven’t had a chance to make any of the recipes but they are all intriguing. I lived in India for a year and many of the spices you use are all familiar to me. Looking forward to trying them soon. Wish I could have seen you and Ree – two of my favorite women in one place! Best of luck to you in your new career!

  41. Earlene

I’m so jealous of you sitting next to Ree! But in a good way!! Keep the faith and keep blogging! Blessings!

  42. Neicy

what have i been doing? taking care of a 2 year old and a 3 week old, well except when i went out for a hair cut. watch NFNS whilst pregnant with baby number 2. i am sure she was rooting for you to win because she heard her mama rooting for you. :)

  43. Jenna

Oh, it sounds like you had an AMAZING day!! How fun! And, yes I also LOVE Ree!! I stood in line for her to sign my book for 5.5 hours last year. It was so worth it!

I love your show, and so does my 6 year old daughter, Jaya. We were watching your show yesterday on our dvr and she told me “MOM, we HAVE to stop watching this b/c I just want to eat it NOW!!” Needless to say, your mango bbq pork is in my dutch oven right now! Thanks so much for being a great tv host! We LOVE your recipes!!

Love your new show, not only you & the food, but also the artwork & the music! You are the one winner of NFNS (and one of the few “television people”) that I would love to meet in person, and that is a high compliment. :)

We watch Rescue Me at our house too. ;)

  46. hanna

aarti! firstly, congrats on winning the next food network star! i’ve been following the show the whole season and was excited that you won!! :)
even though your OWN show has been airing for a few weeks now, i have to admit that i haven’t been able to watch it yet!! church conflicts w/ your airing time, but gee..i guess i should have thought about using my DVR! :/
thirdly, i just found your blog (thankfully!) through ree’s blog and i’ve skimmed through your blog. AND i found out you’re a Christian!!! =) that kind of like made my day. :D i hope that you’re persevering in your faith & i pray you would be a light in the food/tv industry! :) looking forward to following you through your journey.

  51. Kenlyn

Aarti! I am so glad I found your blog through Ree’s sight!! I had no idea you had a blog…I am so excited! I LOVED watchin’ you on Next Food Network Star & was rootin’ for you all the way & jumped for joy when you won…very, very deserving for sure! I just wanna wish you the best in all you do. May God bless you richly!

  52. Melissa SArno

Wowee, two of my favorite bloggers and food personalities on one panel. I wish I could have been there! It’s been so lovely watching you on the next food network star and now on Aarti Party. I wish you the best of luck on all of these new adventures. So far I’ve discovered that if I want to cook your recipes (which I’m gearing up to do!) I need to stock my pantry with cardamom. ;-)

  53. Kristin

That’s amazing! I love the Pioneer Woman, and I confess, I had not seen your blog until now, but watched Next Foodnetwork Star and had picked you as the winner way back in the beginning. :) I’m glad it worked out that way! I can’t wait to try some of your recipes, I love the Indian twist that looks so easy to do. I’ve only worked minimally with curry and love it, so I’m excited to incorporate new spices in our food. God bless you, Aarti! (looks like He is!)

  54. Cindy

How fun! I’m so excited for you. You are so appreciative of where you are and I love that! Loving your show as well!

  55. Jenn

So cool for you to meet Ree! Lucky you. :)

My daughter (8) and I really enjoyed watching you on Next Food Network Star. Congratulations on your awesome new, job!!! Can’t wait to watch some more of Aarti Party!

  56. Lynn

Very exciting stuff. I love you and Ree and both of your blogs are GREAT! Keep it coming. :>)

  57. Julie Anne Rhodes

Drats! I missed it, because I was cooking for hungry clients. I love that you seem to be enjoying every aspect of your success – too often we fight so hard to get there, then forget to savor it once we are there.

  58. carina

Aarti, congratulations on your win! You and Ree were in good company with one another :) Two of my favorites! I rooted for you from go on NFNS – you deserved the win.

Thanks for some great recipes! A few of your recipes have made their way into my kitchen, and my husband has declared them all keepers. Thanks and enjoy your success!

  59. Mackenzie

I hate that I missed this!

  60. Heather Benza

Every week on FN star I thought “I need to check out Aarti’s blog.” I just read about you sitting next to Ree on PW and decided I better finally come check it out! I sure would have loved to see you together!

  61. Kristin Ferrara

Aarti I am SO happy you won NFNS, I was routing for you from episode 1! I feel like your show was created just for me, I LOVE Indian flavors and always look for ways to incorporate them into everyday dishes. You are such a natural on camera, it’s no surprise that your show is so warm, engaging, and inspiring. I am literally going to make every single one of your recipes.

I was so bummed when I found out you were at our (FN) summer party, because I was out of town that week! Hopefully our paths will cross sometime soon tho…

PS-Thanks for explaining ‘accountability group’ :)

  62. White

Aarti, I don’t have TV (never have — I know, unconventional to say the least), but I managed to download 4 episodes of TNFNS, and from the first one, I felt you should/would prevail. Glad you did, you deserved the win.

  63. Heather Hanson

All I have to say is we all want to know when you’re first cookbook is coming out?! I adore Ree and read her blog daily, but you are the new “it” girl for me, hands down. I plan to try out all the recipes you have featured here and on your show and review them for all of my own blog readers. I rooted for you through the whole season of “The Next Food Network Star” and cheered and cried when you won! You are such a beautiful and talented person, I wish the very best for you as your career continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

  64. Adelina

    Hi Aarti,

I finally have my post up from Sunday. You can see the pics with our family at http://bit.ly/bCkNdZ

  65. Regina Williams

Very exciting time for you! I don’t get to watch your show but I watched TNFNWS (cause that is a mouth full). I was pulling for Herb (so sorry but I must be honest) but you were a close second, haha. I thought you both had such great ideas that I could use in the kitchen.

Good luck with all you do and I agree Ree is wonderful!

  66. Mimi the Snapdiva

I am so excited to have watched your star unfolding on The Next Food Network Star. My SO and I aka MC Drummer didn’t miss an episode.
The hardest thing for me on Sundays is that I miss your show! I don’t have TIVO or DVR so I watch the snippets on the Food Network Website and follow your blog.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

  67. Kristin

You are looking like a star! I’ve been thinking lately that while your FN show and your career will be great and I will enjoy watching it unfold, I love the simple boho artist style of your blog show. You won’t have time for that anymore. And your contract may even forbid it. I love seeing your husband and friends participate. I loved finding out you were a fellow burner. You were able to be silly in your online show in a way that perhaps the network won’t let you. I will miss that so very much. But I am still thrilled to see your success! I rather hope you are able to push the boundaries (Alton Brown managed to in his own way) and bring your unique energy to your show.

  68. Beanie

Wait…I love rooibos. and I love chai. And now you’re telling me they can be made together? Tell me how!!!

  69. Lisa

What and exciting time for you! I look forward to watching your show on a regular basis.
P.S. The spice wall your hubby built is genius! I’m seriously coveting it.

  70. Maria Delgado

So excited about your new gig! :)

  71. Stacey

    Aarti,
I finally got to sit down last night and watch 2 of your new shows – love them! I was so excited for you when you won NFNS! You are a joy to watch – I love your warmth and you encourage us as home cooks to venture out in new areas with the spices & ingredients you use. I am also a HUGE PW fan – so cool that you two got a chance to bond in LA. Keep up the good work – ignore the critics (some people just need to get a life) and know that you’re loved by many. God bless you!

  72. Mardi@eatlivetravelwrite

Uh ok. I want your job. Congrats on your much deserved success!

  73. satya

Hi Aarti – I loved watching “The Next Food Network Star” and from the beginning I thought you would win! Contrats! I’m glad I finally found your blog from another blogger’s posting. I could not find any subscriptoin button on your blog; do you allow for subscription? I’d really love to learn to cook those delicious dishes with Indian flavors!

  75. JenChef

Hi Aarti! I just wanna say; I LOVE you! Your genuine and kind spirit really comes through your blog and on TV. I devotedly tuned in to watch you on NFNS every week and was rooting for you from the start.

Thank you for being such an inspiration to your fellow all food lovers and chef’s alike!

PS. Any idea when your show will air on Food Network Canada?

  76. Angie

Aarti + Ree = Angie has a nerdgasm! How cool!

  77. Pau

OMG!!! I love Ree, she’s so witty and amazing! I bet you two clicked immediately, your personalities are so similar (or seem to anyway, I don’t know either of you in person lol).
Love your blog, love your show and love the fact you showed those FN execs that food bloggers can be as knowledgeable and passionate about food as professional chefs!

  78. Rachel

O-M-G!! Ree! I love her website, and her recipes! She is such fun to read, and her food never disappoints! I’ve just started reading your blog, too, and I find it just as entertaining and informative as her’s! Love it! =) Can’t wait to see what is in store for you next, and I wish you all the best!

  79. Sabrina

Aw, yay Aarti! You sound like you had so much fun, and what great fans who came out to support you! I watched a marathon of The Next Food Network Star one Sunday, and I had my money on you from the jump! And yes, I may be slightly bias toward your recipes because my mamas from India, too:) I had a chance to hang out at Ree’s lodge over the summer (http://tinyurl.com/2acugvn) for a blogging project (http://tinyurl.com/2vkfszg) and you’re right, she’s a wonderful woman with a beautiful spirit. Best of luck to you — I’ll be tuning into your show! Yay for (modern) Indian cooking! <3

  80. Allyson

It’s so funny that you were excited about meeting Ree because when I first read her post about speaking at the festival I thought “Oh my gosh, she got to meet Aarti!”
